Grategy – Lisa Ryan Speaks

3 Top Employee Engagement and Gratitude Articles for the Week of November 21, 2014

Because there are so many great articles on employee engagement and creating a culture of appreciation in the workplace, I want to share the best of these resources with you. Here are my favorites from this week. I have included some of my thoughts on these gratitude strategies (“Grategies”) and would like to hear your comments too.

The Employee Engagement Hoax by Liz Ryan

(Forbes.com) “Employee engagement is a made-up concept that exists solely to make leaders and HR people feel as though they’ve really got an ear to the ground, even in cases where no such careful listening exists. The most common invocation of the term Employee Engagement is in the annual Employee Engagement survey, an insulting ritual.”

My Thoughts: Read the entire article – Liz makes a LOT of good points that make the case for culture change, not just a quick fix or a “checking off the boxes” mentality of engagement.

Why Employee Engagement Is Critical to Corporate Success by James O’Brien

(Mashable) “One recent ADP report found that when workers become disengaged because they are bored, dissatisfied or uninspired by their job, each employee can represent more than $2,000 in annual loss.”

My Thoughts: It’s all about these kinds of numbers. When an organization’s leadership sees the dollars being wasted by lack of engagement, they are much more likely to consider doing something about it.

Employee Job Satisfaction and Engagement a research report by SHRM (Society of Human Resource Managers)

“Compensation/pay is typically a top priority, as it was in 2013, but many workers are also motivated and inspired by the relationships they have with colleagues and supervisors, and the ability to use their skills in their jobs.

My thoughts: I enjoyed reading this thorough and very descriptive white paper on the trends affecting employee engagement today in the area of Human Resources.
