Being Grateful for Your Problems

you're fired on paper“I am grateful for all of my problems.  After each one was overcome, I became stronger and more able to meet those that were still to come.  I grew in all my difficulties.”  JC Penney

The first time I got fired was in 1988.  I was working at a job that I hated and I was miserable.  Instead of looking forward to the weekend on Fridays, I was depressed, knowing I had to go back to work on Monday.

One Sunday night I was driving home from a wrestling with the questions – Do I quit now or wait until I have another job?  What am I supposed to do?  So I started to pray.

I said, “Dear God, please give me a sign.  Should I quit my job or just stay until I find something else?  Let me know what I’m supposed to do.”  Well, I didn’t see a lightning strike, or a big sign in the sky so the next morning, I got dressed and went to work – where I promptly got fired.

The Universe works in strange and mysterious ways.  My ego was hurt from getting fired; it’s not a pleasant experience.  The good news is, it was the drought of 1988 and the summer was FABULOUS.  I took some time off, enjoyed myself, and the next job I got led me to the next 20 years of a very successful sales career.

Everything works out just the way it’s supposed to – and I definitely grew in the experience.  What lessons have you learned as a result of a painful experience?

Have fun,

Lisa
