Gratitude Preserves Friendships

Donna, a long-time Gratitude Thought of the Week        reader shares how she procured a new friend through the power of gratitude.

“We live on a fairly long street that ends in a cul-de-sac. We hadn’t met our new neighbors as it was winter and you just don’t see folks much.  My husband Larry was walking our two large dogs when one of them decided to chase a car.  Larry thought he had prepared himself, but the sidewalk was very icy.  His right left stayed in place as he was spun around by the dog.  Larry collapsed on the gravel driveway with two broken legs, trying to hold onto the dogs.  Hearing the commotion, the neighbor’s dog barked until his mistress came to the door. She called 911 and went out to be with my husband until the ambulance arrived.  Her husband came home in the meantime and he followed the ambulance to Hillcrest where he stayed with Larry and brought him home.  That’s how we met our neighbors.”

There are so many things to be grateful for in that story: the neighbor’s dog for playing the role of “Lassie” and coming to the rescue; the neighbor for heeding her dog’s barking and calling 911; the neighbor’s husband for staying with Larry at the hospital and then bringing him now; and finally, the new friendship that happened because of a seemingly unfortunate circumstance.  It just goes to show you, there are no accidents (pun intended!)
