Gratitude Unexpressed is Ingratitude

There’s a story about a husband and wife on the morning of their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. The woman is sobbing hysterically, and the husband has no idea why. He asks her, “What is wrong? Why are you crying on our anniversary?” The wife answers, “You never tell me you love me.” The husband replies, “Listen, I told you twenty-five years ago I loved you. If anything changes, I’ll let you know.”

Don’t do that.

No matter how long you’ve been in a relationship, it’s important to share with that person how much you admire, respect, love, and are grateful for having them in your life. We often think that the people we care about most must know how we feel. You know what happens when you assume (You make an ASS of U and ME).

Several years ago, I started sneaking notes into my husband’s lunch bag, letting him know how much I love him and wishing him a good day. Think about the people that could use a note from you? Yes, this works great at home – and it’s a terrific strategy to engage your employees in the workplace as well.

Looking for an inexpensive idea to connect with your staff? A well-timed smiley face on a post-it note can make their day. You are giving that team member tangible evidence of a job well done.

Even if it’s difficult for you to express your feelings for someone else, start in a small way. Maybe a text or an email is a good way to begin. Whatever you decide, take some action today.

PS – Expressing gratitude is as much for you as it is for the receiver of your appreciation.
