Nurturing Relationships and Having Fun

Lisa Ryan Grategy dolphins“We are creatures of community.  Those individuals, societies, and cultures who learned to take care of each other, to love each other, and to nurture relationships with each other during the past several hundred thousand years were more likely to survive than those who did not.” Dr. Dean Ornish

The real reason dolphins have been around for about 15 million years? Those animals know how to have fun! I had the opportunity to experience a lifelong dream of swimming with them on my birthday. I petted them, danced with them, and got a belly ride. What a blast!

It’s not just for the aquarium show – dolphins enjoy socializing and playing. Even while in the wild, they toss seaweed back and forth with each other and tease other living creatures in the water. They are just as happy as you imagine them to be.

This encounter made me realize how similar dolphins are to people. Just like us, dolphins take care of their sick, the elderly and those that are injured. We humans feel most connected to others when we serve them. Also, when we give ourselves the gift of playtime, we reduce our stress level and have a lot more fun.

So what are you doing to connect with loved ones? Why not give a friend or family member a call and schedule some quality time together? The memories you’ll create are priceless.

Also, stop the constant focus on business and take some times for fun. When I want to take a break, I do crossword puzzles, read, and/or play with my cats. Give yourself some “me time” even if it’s just for ten minutes. If you don’t play, you’ll pay!
PS – The best is when I’m reading a great book or doing a crossword puzzle with a kitty or two on my lap!
