The Opinions of Others Don’t Matter

confused man looking at arrows on wall“Risk! Risk anything! Care no more for the opinion for others, for those voices. Do the hardest thing on earth for you.  Act for yourself.  Face the truth.” Katherine Mansfield

The universal truth about opinions is that we all have them. The problem is that we become so focused on our perception of the situation that we don’t take into consideration that there truly are two sides to every story.

When you are pursuing your life’s dreams, you may find that your friends and family don’t understand what you’re doing, and subsequently don’t support your efforts. This is frustrating because we all want the acknowledgment and support of those we love. Remember, for all the stories that you are making up about them, they are making up their own stories about you.

If you choose to be an entrepreneur in a family of corporate 9-to-5’ers, chances are they will not understand. You see yourself with the freedom and flexibility of being your own boss while pursuing your passion; they may see you as someone that doesn’t “work” for a living because you don’t receive a regular paycheck.

If you choose to go back to school to get your degree and you associate with people who do not value higher education, they may see you as someone that wants to be “better” than them and they may ridicule your efforts.

Choose to see the opinions of others for what they are – their own. You are not going to change them. Don’t hold yourself back because of someone else’s story, make up your own as you go along and create your own happy ending.

Have fun,

Lisa
