Top 3 Employee Engagement and Appreciation Articles for the Week of February 13, 2015

Because there are so many great articles on employee engagement and creating a culture of appreciation in the workplace, I want to share the best of these resources with you. Here are my favorites from this week. I have included some of my thoughts on these gratitude strategies (“Grategies”) and would like to hear your comments too.

Cost Analysis: The Price of Poor Communication by Erin P. Friar

(Business 2 Community) “According to a Communication ROI study, businesses who were found to communicate effectively were 50% more likely to have lower-than-average rates of employee turnover. Aside from the negative effects high turnover has on your remaining employees, it can be very costly. For example, one study found that to replace one $10/hour employee can cost a business $3,328.”

My Thoughts:  It often feels like we are over-communicating our wishes to employees but in many cases we are not connecting with them in the ways that matter to them as individuals.

Why Giving Thanks Could Be Your Most Cost-Effective Business Strategy by Phaedra Hise

(American Express Open) ““Lately, research shows the value of non-monetary gratitude versus giving employees a lot of stuff,” Ryan says. “Say you work hard to win a 72-inch TV, but by the time you get it, you may be saying, ‘My manager is a jerk, the TV isn’t worth it, and I don’t feel appreciated,’ and you leave. So rather than stuff, get back to the principle of expressing true appreciation. And that needs to start at the top.”

My Thoughts:  A little gratuitous, yes, but it was very fun to be quoted in American Express Open! Thank you Phaedra Hise!

Can’t Get No Satisfaction (In my job) by Tom Zender

(Phoenix Business Blog) “Employee engagement stems from a sense of empowerment and feeling connected to the organization – fitting in. When leaders help their people find a place to work and find their place with work, great progress is made.”

My thoughts:  Why is it so hard for leaders to get past the “That’s what they are paid to do” mentality and express appreciation for their employees contribution to the corporate mission. Your employee matter – let them know!
