3 Top Employee Engagement and Gratitude Articles for the Week of November 28, 2014

Because there are so many great articles on employee engagement and creating a culture of appreciation in the workplace, I want to share the best of these resources with you. Here are my favorites from this week. I have included some of my thoughts on these gratitude strategies (“Grategies”) and would like to hear your comments too.

It’s Not About the Bagels by Charles J. Alaimo

(Huffington Post) “Each employer’s idea of engagement and how to bring it about is different. Respect that what may work at another company, may not be the right fit for yours. Understand, and be true to your culture.”

My Thoughts: Changing the culture takes time and constant communication. You’ll read nine tips on how get your team to trust the initiative and buy into it.

Your Employees Don’t All Want the Same Company Culture, Now What? by Nicole Fallon

(Fox Business) “Like consumers with the brands they choose, employees don’t all want the same things in an employer, and yet some companies continue to take a “one-size-fits-all” approach to workplace satisfaction.”

My Thoughts: Similar to the article above, when employee engagement takes an individualized approach, it’s much more likely to be effective. Talk to your employees, find out what they want, and make it happen to the best of your ability.

Five Ways to Cultivate Gratitude at Work by Jeremy Adam Smith

“According to a survey of 2,000 Americans released earlier this year by the John Templeton Foundation, people are less likely to feel or express gratitude at work than anyplace else. And they’re not thankful for their current jobs, ranking them dead last in a list of things they’re grateful for.”

My thoughts: I love the science behind gratitude and this article is powerful, dispelling the notions that expressing appreciation to others at work leads to being taken advantage of. It’s a process, it takes time, and the rewards are priceless.
